Calabria not only sea...
Updated: May 28
Calabria, a region of Southern Italy, is one of the most naturalistic regions of the Italian landscape. Located on the toe of the boot, it is bathed by 2 seas, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea, the latter the deepest in Italy, just over 4000 meters. Known and famous in the for the world for its bronze statues, the Riace Bronzes, found in 1972, are currently in the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria. Also famous for its sea, beautiful beaches, its art and archaeological areas of finds from different peoples (Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Angevins, Bourbons, Spaniards, French), spicy cuisine and licorice roots. In short, a region that offers a mix of all that a place can offer .. In this post, however, we will focus on another naturalistic beauty the different waterfalls that are located in the outback of the region between the Sila National Park and the Aspromonte.

The best time to visit the waterfalls in Calabria is between spring and autumn, when the water of the falls is more abundant and the climatic conditions are certainly favorable for outdoor walks. These natural places are not easy to reach, so I recommend that you rely on an expert guide, especially if you are not a professional in nature activities.
Below are the most beautiful waterfalls to visit...
San Nicola of Caulonia Falls
The Maesano Falls also known as Amendolea Falls, from the name of the river from which they originate. They can be reached along a path surrounded by dense vegetation or, for the lazy, using jeeps. The Maesano waterfalls differ from many others in Calabria, due to the three jump levels that end in a small lake, where resisting the temptation to dive is really difficult. But we warn you, the water is freezing, even in summer.
The Marmarico Falls are natural waterfalls of Calabria, in the Folea Valley, in the locality of Bivongi. With the jump of 114 meters, this wins the title of the highest waterfall in Calabria, so much so that it is mentioned in several rankings of the most beautiful waterfalls in our country. The waterfall that rises from the Stilaro river is located in the heart of the Serre Natural Park, between the Sila park and the Aspromonte park. Several species of animals and a rich vegetation frame this magnificent natural spectacle in Calabria.
In the Aspromonte area, following a path that starts from the Piano Conavai refuge, we set out to discover the wonderful Forgiarelle Falls, also known as the Ferraina Falls. Pines, beeches, oaks, larches and wild animals characterize the trekking route in Calabria traveling towards the Aspromonte waterfalls. The Ferraina waterfalls are located not far from the town of Samo, in the province of Reggio Calabria, among the oldest of the cities of Calabria. The falls cover an overhang about 100 meters high, a spectacle to be admired and listened to in silence.
Another destination not to be missed, for lovers of excursions and green tourism in Calabria is that of Valli Cupe di Sersale, in the province of Catanzaro. We are located at the foot of the Sila Piccola, characterized by several mountain centers. From the locality of Valli Cupe you can reach, along a path of about 200 meters, the famous Campanaro Falls, also known as the Valli Cupe waterfalls. In order to visit this natural spectacle it is necessary to collect a ticket at the center located on the old bridge.
The San Nicola waterfalls in Caulonia RC, a truly enchanting place. In the middle of the mountains, on the banks of the river, with waterfalls and natural whirlpools. For those who love nature and absolute relaxation. Not recommended in August as it is too crowded. A lido has been installed on site that offers various services, some for a fee, such as umbrellas and deck chairs, or even a barbecue. Easily accessible, just follow the signs, they are located about 14 km from Caulonia Marina. For a day of total relaxation surrounded by nature.
