Updated: May 13

San Gimignano, a small fortified town halfway between Florence and Siena, is famous for its architecture and its beautiful medieval towers that make the city profile truly unique.

Piazza del Duomo-San Gimignano

The Cathedral of San Gimignano, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, or Collegiate Church, dominates the square of the same name from the top of a staircase. Built in 1100, it is one of the examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. Inside there are some of the beautiful frescoes by the major Tuscan artists of the time.

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990, San Gimignano is one of the small pearls of the province of Siena and also offers excellent local products such as saffron and white wine called Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

San Gimignano as well as being a cultural location full of history is also a place to relax in one of the many small villages with typical stone structures.
